How Your Muffler Makes a Big Difference
Have you ever sat at a red light and examined all the cars around you, primarily those in front of you? What you’re likely to notice is that not all mufflers are the same, and not all cars have the same muffler or muffler set up. Some are simple and black. Others are shiny and coated in chrome. Some cars have one muffler visible while others have two. While all you might see is a series of tubes with holes that expel engine exhaust out of your car, your muffler is much more than that! At Christian Brothers Automotive, we actually think automotive mufflers are pretty similar to musical instruments. Explanation? Let’s!
How is Your Muffler Like a Musical Instrument?
Like many musical instruments make a sound when air is blown through them, your muffler makes a sound due to the gasses blown through its various pipes. The only difference is that a properly tuned muffler produces a sound that is as quiet as can be and nothing like a perfectly played musical note. Are mufflers supposed to be quiet? Is that the rule?
Are Quiet Mufflers the Law?
Mufflers are tuned to cancel out the noise made by gasses bouncing around the exhaust pipes. The noise level a car produces is immense without the muffler and can be quite unbearable (especially when driving by your home late at night). In fact, if any part of your exhaust system were removed or absent, there would be a dramatic increase in volume. Per many laws throughout the United States, mufflers should be working correctly in order to prevent excessive or unusual noises. Since quiet is the rule in most places, how does it work?
How Do Mufflers Tune Engine Noise?
Engines create loud noises when they release pressurized gas. When this happens, the muffler springs into action and absorbs the sound waves from that gaseous release. That’s how it is designed. The muffler also controls how your car sounds, whether it has a soft purr or a loud roar, and, since every driver has a particular sound they are looking for, there's a muffler out there to make everyone happy. Rumor has it, though, that a muffler has an impact on horsepower. True or false?
Do Mufflers Impact Fuel Efficiency & Power?
Yes. Noise-cancellation is an important function, but the muffler also affects your vehicle's fuel efficiency and power. When exhaust fumes are free to move quickly through the muffler and exit the vehicle, the engine can take in fresh air faster, which is great for your system. The larger the pipes and muffler, the more quickly that pressurized gas can exit. The quicker the exit, the more power your car will have.
The larger pipes and mufflers may improve the power of your vehicle ,but they will do so at the cost of fuel efficiency. This is the main reason why automobile manufacturers rely on their stock mufflers; they want to ensure there is an ideal balance between fuel economy and power. Shrinking those large exhaust systems down to stock size decreases power but increases fuel efficiency, and it’s probably safe to assume that we all enjoy spending less money at the gas pump. Does that mean less noise equals more money in your pocket? It sure seems that way!
Do Mufflers Need Maintenance?
Believe it or not, your vehicle's muffler doesn't require immediate or routine maintenance to keep it working properly; however, it's important to note that your muffler will need to be serviced or replaced completely one day. How do you know if it needs servicing or even a replacement?
Here are a few signs that your muffler may need service:
- Changes in the tune of your muffler…a sound difference.
- Loud noises when accelerating…a volume difference.
- The smell of exhaust in the car's cabin…an experiential difference.
- Large loss in fuel efficiency…a cost difference.
- Excess or odd-colored smoke…a visible difference.
