Preparing Your Car for Colder Weather: Essential Tips from Christian Brothers Auto

| By: Christian Brothers Automotive

As we inch closer to the colder months here in the Mid-Cities, it's time to think about more than just sweaters and hot cocoa. Your car needs some extra love too! At Christian Brothers Auto, we know how important it is to keep your vehicle running smoothly, especially when the temperatures drop. So, here’s a friendly reminder of what you should check to ensure you’re ready for the chilly weather.

1. Check Your Battery

Cold weather can be tough on car batteries, making it harder to start your engine. If your battery is more than a few years old, it might be a good idea to have it tested. A weak battery in freezing temperatures can leave you stranded, and no one wants that on a frosty morning!

2. Tire Pressure and Tread

Did you know that cooler temperatures can cause tire pressure to drop? Make sure to check your tire pressure regularly. Underinflated tires can lead to poor traction, especially if there's ice or frost on the road. While you're at it, inspect your tire tread. Worn-out tires can be dangerous in wet or icy conditions.

3. Top Off Fluids

Colder weather can put a strain on your vehicle’s fluids. Ensure your coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid are topped off and in good condition. It’s also a good time to switch to winter-grade oil if you haven’t already. And don’t forget windshield washer fluid! You’ll want to be able to clear that morning frost off your windshield.

4. Inspect Your Wipers

Speaking of windshields, when’s the last time you checked your wiper blades? Streaky or old wipers won’t do you any favors when winter rain or fog sets in. Invest in a set of high-quality blades that can stand up to the elements and keep your visibility clear.

5. Check Your Heater and Defroster

You probably haven’t used your car’s heater since last winter, so it’s a good idea to test it before the cold weather really hits. Make sure your heater is working efficiently, and check your defroster to ensure you won’t be battling fogged-up windows.

6. Brake Inspection

Slippery roads require excellent stopping power. Make sure your brakes are in top shape before the first sign of winter weather. If you're noticing any squeaking, grinding, or longer stopping distances, bring your vehicle in for a free brake inspection.

7. Emergency Kit

Lastly, it’s always smart to keep an emergency kit in your car, just in case. This could include a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, ice scraper, bottled water, and non-perishable snacks. It’s better to be prepared, especially when temperatures drop. You may be tempted to skip this step thinking that it doesn’t get cold enough in Texas. Resist the urge to skip it as it doesn’t take very long in cooler weather without proper gear to put your health in jeopardy.
