What is ASE?
ASE is short for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Right now, over 300,000 automotive technicians have certifications from ASE.
How do technicians become certified by ASE?
There are over 40 ASE certification tests, spaning from collision repair to auto parts. Applicants must pass at least one of these tests and have two years of relevant on-the-job experience to receive ASE certification. Those who complete more than one test receives Master status. To make sure certified technicians remain up to date with changes in the industry, ASE mandates that they retake their tests every five years or their status will be lost.
What are the tests like?
To ensure relevance and quality, ASE employs a panel of executives, manufacturers, educators, and technicians in the automotive industry to create the exams. Most technicians take about two hours to complete an exam. Only two of every three people who take one of these tests will pass on their first attempt.
