Prepare Your Car’s AC System for Summer | Christian Brothers Automotive, East Wichita
We always look forward to the fun in the sun that summer brings, but the sweltering heat can be rather oppressive as we move into July and August—which can be especially evident if you are having to get into a hot car! If you have to park your car outside of a garage you are likely quite familiar with what a sauna your car can turn into even in a short amount of time.
The temperature of a car parked in the sun can quickly reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which is quite unpleasant to get into—and even more so if your car’s AC is not ready to combat the heat! Below, we will look at some tips for getting your car’s AC system ready for summer and how to determine if it is time for you to schedule a service.
Make Sure Your Car’s AC System is Prepared for Summer
Test your fan speeds. Before the weather turns sweltering, it is a good idea to test the fans in your car’s AC system. Be sure that the fans blow at every speed from low to high, both with the air conditioning on and off.
Test your temperatures. To prepare for the hottest days of summer, make sure your AC is able to blow air that is cool and cold for best results. Let your system run for a bit at varying degrees of coldness so you are certain that it works at every temperature setting.
Check your cabin air quality. Every car is equipped with a cabin air filter, which is designed to keep the air that is circulating through your system fresh and free from pollutants. It is recommended that you replace this filter every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, but your schedule can vary based on how often and where you drive.
Watch for hose leaks. Your air conditioning system relies on freon to keep things cold, and if you have a leak in a hose, this freon can leak out of the system and leave you with lukewarm (or even hot) air. Make sure you check for puddles where your car is parked and are keeping track of your freon levels just in case.
