Basic Power Steering Parts and How They Work
| By: Christian Brothers Automotive

The power steering system provides a quintessential function for everyday operation of your automobile. Today, the ASE-certified technicians at Christian Brothers Automotive Olathe are sharing their extensive knowledge about power steering to guide you and your future repair decisions.

Basic parts of the power steering system

Power Steering Pump – provides pressure for the fluid and is powered by a belt.

Rack and Pinion – The rack and pinion turn the driver’s steering input into the motion for turning the front wheels.

Steering Yoke – A thick rubber piece that absorbs road shock and prevents the driver from feeling bumps and dips through the steering wheel.

Steering Coupler – A joint that allows the steering wheel to rotate without binding up in the column. This is due to the fact that the input shaft and steering column are only in slight alignment to each other.

Power Steering Hoses – There are two main hoses, a high side and a low side. The high side hose brings pressurized power steering fluid to provide power to the steering inputs. The low side hose moves low pressure fluid back to the pump.

How these parts work together

Cars and trucks of have power steering pumps that provide the pressurized steering fluid for the rack and pinion unit. As the driver steers the vehicle, the power steering control valve puts fluid pressure to one side of the piston, which helps move the steering wheel. As the wheel is moving, the pinion turns against the rack and the two gears force the car in the desired direction – effectively turning your wheels.

Power steering maintenance in Olathe, KS

The best way to maintain your power steering system is by making sure the power steering fluid is in good condition. Any difficulty turning your steering wheel could signify a power steering issue. A leak is usually the culprit, causing your car to lose fluid. However, a worn out belt may also be an issue.

A strange noise, such as a squeal or whine, while turning the wheel of your car, indicates power steering pump might be ready to fail. We highly recommend taking your car to a qualified professional if anything like this should happen. It’s very unsafe to drive with a faulty power steering system, especially if it fails while you’re out on the road.
