The Shortcut to Easy Engine Maintenance: The Cooling System
As previously mentioned in our blog post on Air Filter Service, debris in the engine and overheating are the two most common reasons for engine failure. When dirt makes its way into the engine, it can cause severe system damage. Similarly, the engine overheating can cause trouble when the moving parts destroy one another.
This is the reason your cooling system is so important. This component alleviates the problems of extreme heat by maintaining the engine’s core temperature.
Most drivers in North Richland Hills confuse the AC system with the cooling system. To shine some light on the cooling system, we’re going to explain the function and importance of this essential system.
What is the cooling system?
The engine cooling system includes:
- The water pump
- Coolant (water mixed with antifreeze)
- Upper radiator hose
- Radiator
- Lower radiator hose
- Several pipes and fans
Coolant flows through the system, picking up surplus heat. The heat is then dispersed into the radiator, where it is sent outside the car or cycled through the ventilation system.
What does the cooling system do?
Though it’s called the “cooling system,” this component does more than simply cool the engine.
In fact, the cooling system has three main responsibilities:
- Disperse excess engine heat
- Quickly heat a cold engine
- Maintain proper engine running temperature
While running, the engine is creating controlled explosions. The coolant’s purpose is to heat the engine to the necessary temperature, and then sustain that temperature throughout the drive. As the engine’s temperature increases, the coolant begins picking up and dispersing the excess heat.
Your car’s cooling system has a big job
It’s true, the cooling system and the AC system are different. While the AC system keeps you comfortable, the cooling system is cooling, heating and maintaining the engine’s temperature. With periodic inspections and upkeep, you can protect your engine from overheating.
