What’s the difference between fuel injection and carburetors?
The ASE-certified technicians at Christian Brothers Automotive Schertz are going to compare the two types of fuel systems that have been widely implemented into vehicles – the carburetor and fuel injection.
The pros and cons between these two systems have long been debated. Each is unique and comes with it’s own set of advantages. However, cars made today come with fuel injection engines. This is a trend that started in the late 1970’s when the U.S. government passed regulations on emissions.
Take a quick look at this chart to see why each system is used.
Fuel Injection | Carburetor | |
Costs | Fuel injection engines are much more expensive, but the maintenance is cheaper and easier! | Less expensive than a direct fuel injection engine, but much higher maintenance costs. |
Fuel Economy | Computers and sensors make the fuel injection much more efficient than carburetors. | Carburetors cannot adjust for different types of weather or other road conditions when delivering fuel to the engine. |
Emissions | Since fuel injection is more efficient, it’s also a lot cleaner and more environmentally friendly. | Carburetors are not very friendly when it comes to emitting CO2. |
Performance | Fuel injection limits the amount of gas is delivered to the engine in order to stay efficient. This limits the amount of power it can give to the engine. | Carburetors provide great power and performance at the cost of efficiency. |
Fuel System Maintenance in Texas
It can get pretty dusty here in Texas. That’s why cars have air and fuel filters to make sure dirt and other particles in the air don’t contaminate the fuel system. The problem is, these filters will get clogged over time. When air and fuel cannot easily move through the filters, it puts more stress on the system. That’s why changing the filters and complete fuel system cleanings are so important.
By simply cleaning the vehicle you’re increasing your car’s life span and keeping it running like new for much longer. It’s the easiest and cheapest way to take care of your car or truck.
